Dr. Geoffrey Kayanja │ Zion Medical Center, Ngoma

Geoffrey Kayanja is the proprietor of Zion Medical Center and a Clinical Officer by profession. He now owns three medical centers that employ up to 15 staff in Ngoma, Nakaseke District towards the northern region of Uganda. The residents of the area say that he is the best medical personnel in the area and provides good quality medical services.

Among all his siblings he was the only one who was privileged to attend school because his mother always told him, she was educating him so that he can support his other siblings in school – she had so much confidence in him. When Geoffrey reached Primary Seven he lost his mother to an illness but Ambassadors of Hope continued to take him on through school and take care of him. In his own words Geoffrey testifies, he was given hope even when he became an orphan to pursue his dream to be a doctor.

Having attended African Outreach Academy – one of the Ambassadors of Hope program centers, he was enrolled in the sponsorship program and he was later taken to Luwero Senior School for High School from where he was taken to Mengo School of Nursing and Midwifery where he did a certificate in Comprehensive Nursing. Ambassadors of Hope continued to support Geoffrey in his endeavors to achieve his dream and he went on to study a diploma in Diagnostics Ultrasound and Radiology/Sonography.

Geoffrey’s dream is to build a major hospital in the area and be able to practice health and perform major surgical procedures so that people’s lives are saved and better health services are brought closer to the people. He was quoted saying, “If someone hadn’t reached out through Ambassadors of Hope, I probably would not have gotten an education, and I would not have achieved let alone dreamed of big things. Big thanks to Ambassadors of Hope for helping me reach here. If given the opportunity I want to give someone hope like I was given hope."

Edward Kabali | Agriculture Teacher at Grace High School

Edward is a teacher of Agriculture and Biology at Grace High School Gayaza one of the Ambassadors of Hope program centers. He is inspired by his students and wants to leave each of them with a piece of his heart. He wants them to inspire others too.

Edward grew up in a family of 11 children raised by a single mother after their father abandoned them, he attended a slum school but he dropped out eventually because his mother could not afford his tuition as she had no job and yet had to support her children. She did odd jobs in the community to raise money such as mowing lawns, washing clothes and selling charcoal. In addition to this, Edward was raised in a well-known Kampala slum called Gizagiza in Mbuya a suburb of Kampala. He admits he grew up knowing that drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, and domestic violence were an upright way of life but all this changed when his mother took her chances at having him enrolled into a new free Literacy program of Ambassadors of Hope in 1996 at Bugolobi Literacy School which was close to their area where he was enrolled into Primary Three class.

Upon joining the literacy Program, Edward had no interest in education because he had no exposure, his parents had never gone to school and so he didn’t find any relevance in school. However, he slowly gained interest in education and eventually had a career goal to be a teacher. He says, "The food attracted me to attend school because I had no choice at home the only meal was porridge without sugar. I recall the first time I ever wore shoes was at the Literacy school, I was given two pairs of shoes as a Christmas gift. Life kept changing, I found it quite attractive to stay in school." Edward eventually attended Uphill College Mbuya for his High School and then joined Kyambogo University to pursue his dream of becoming a teacher. He mentioned to us that he can trace very well where all his other peers ended, most of them got arrested by security agencies, the girls got pregnant while others beg for their next meal.

Edward owes his destiny to Ambassadors of hope and someone whom he has never met but only wrote to in a letter. He says, “There are so many people out there who love and support a child they never met or might never even meet. Great thanks to them for the big heart. Today I have been able to support my siblings through school and also make something out life because of the education that Ambassadors of Hope gave me. If it weren’t for them I do not know what would have become of me today.”

Gloria Achola │ Student at Grace High School

Gloria attends Grace High School (one of the Ambassadors of Hope program centers) and she is currently in Senior Five studying Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Computer Education. She topped her Ordinary Level class at Senior Four at the same school in 2018 with 15 aggregates for 8 subjects. She is making huge strides towards achieving her dream of becoming a doctor.

Gloria lives with both her parents in one of the Kampala Suburbs called Bukoto. She is the only girl among 6 boys and the only one currently in school. Her father is a builder while her mother is a farmer, they do not earn enough to take care of the family and so when Ambassadors of Hope started a Literacy School in her area (Bukoto Community Primary School), she was enrolled into the sponsorship program and she has been able to attend school consistently. Gloria is focused and at all levels she has been hardworking and she has been able to top her class throughout. She said, “My entire family is not educated as well as I am, with the help of Ambassadors of Hope I will go ahead and change that.” Gloria is certain that after high school she will go ahead and pursue her dream to be a doctor and share the hope and love Ambassadors of Hope has shown her.
